Praia do Castelo

At Castelo Beach, the cliffs stand tall, marking the landscape. The beach, nestling between rocky walls, is full of hidden nooks and little bays. At the easternmost end, a scenic rock formation reminiscent of the battlements of a fantasy castle, give the beach its name. This small promontory is deeply eroded; the rocky ledges that stand out are made of a harder stone, which is more resistant to erosion. Around the beach, the dominant colour is the deep green of the pine trees. On the flattened tops of the rocky ledges, green is also the dominant colour, but in this case, the plants are those that have adapted to a marine environment, such as saltwort, Mediterranean saltbush and samphire. A number of birds, such as falcons and great cormorants appreciate these sites that are inaccessible to land predators. This is a great place for walks along the cliff tops. You will be able to see the little bays and see the geological features generated by erosion, especially sinkholes and caves. However, you are advised to exercise caution and keep a safe distance from the edge of the cliffs.
