This is a large beach, bathed by warm waters, associated with the village of Manta Rota. It continues on from the sandy barrier that delimits the Ria Formosa lagoon system to the east. Although Manta Rota retains some of its original character as a fishing village, it is today a major tourist resort.
A large square with places to stay, commercial establishments, a children’s playground, market and arts centre offers plenty of entertainment, especially in the summer, and provides several access points to the beach.
The network of paths and raised walkways leading off the square will take you through the dunes, giving you the chance to observe the plant life of the dunes from the inland side, where you will see aromatic species such as the curry plant and bushes such as bridal veil broom (a characteristic plant in the sandy eastern Algarve), all the way to the side facing the sea, where the dominant plants are beach grass and sea holly. Although this is a very popular beach, you will still be able to find some quiet spots, especially at the far ends of the beach.
