Ilha de Cabanas

To the east of Tavira, lies the Island of Cabanas, a narrow strip of sand that stretches all the way to the harbour at Cacela, the easternmost harbour in the Ria Formosa. The beach is located opposite the village of Cabanas, whose origins date back to the times of the tuna-fishing campaigns. It remains a land of fishermen to this day. Along the recently upgraded Cabanas seafront avenue, you can spot the traditional fishing boats anchored in the estuary and the storage huts. The best way to get to the island is by boat and the crossing only takes a few minutes since the section of estuary separating the island from the mainland is not very wide. Once on the beach, you will probably want to go for a walk; if you go a little farther, you will be able to enjoy some moments of peace and solitude. On your return to Cabanas, you can savour oysters and clams, gathered from the nurseries, fresh, charcoal-grilled fish and a variety of octopus dishes in the many seafront restaurants.
