Although Phoenician in origin, the walls of Tavira were rebuilt over the course of the 11th and 12th centuries, during the Arab period.
After the Christian re-conquest of the city in 1242, the walls benefited from various improvements during the reigns of D. Afonso III and D. Dinis.
There are some sections of wall still standing, as well as the nucleus of the castle.
Inside there is a pleasant garden and you can enjoy a fine view over the city.
