Praia do Forte Novo is located at the far eastern end of Quarteira but in a natural setting, well away from the urban bustle. There are no breakwaters here, a fact which has, unfortunately, resulted in a large amount of sand being lost from the beach. The soft, low, deep ochre cliffs typical of this part of the coastline make their appearance here, contrasting sharply with the deep green of the pine trees and pearly-white colour of the sand. The sea often reaches all the way to the base of the cliffs which, here and there, has resulted in the roots of some of the pine trees becoming exposed. This is a transitional zone; to the west you can see the vast built-up area of Quarteira and Vilamoura, while to the east the buildings give way to the greenery of the pine trees atop red cliffs, punctuated here and there by small coastal lagoons.
