The Igreja de São Pedro is located in the heart of Peniche’s historic centre and is the largest church in the district.
Dating from the end of the 16th century, the church is divided into a central nave and two side aisles. In each of the aisles, there are several altars devoted to such deities as Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Our Lady of the Safe Voyage), Senhor do Bonfim (Our Lord of the Good End) and St. Peter of Alcántara. In the central nave, attention is drawn to the magnificent baroque chancel dedicated to St. Peter, decorated with carved and gilded woodwork and displaying some extremely beautiful columns, as well as various 18th-century paintings depicting scenes from the life of the patron saint.
It is undoubtedly the most imposing church in the whole district.
