Section 6 - Algarve

Sagres / Carrapateira

This section starts in Sagres, where you must visit the Fortress of Cape St. Vincent. Nearby, you’ll also find the Fort of Santo António de Beliche, which was built in the 16th century to protect against pirate attacks. Surprisingly, it’s still in use today, even though it was constructed in 1904. It has a unique polygonal wall with a tower, and inside, you’ll discover various structures, including a chapel dedicated to Santa Catarina. The chapel has a cubic design with a dome, influenced by Moroccan shrines.

As part of the historical and cultural heritage in this area, the Torre de Aspa stands out as the highest point along the Algarve coastline, reaching around 156 meters.

When you get to Vila do Bispo, don’t miss visiting the Mother Church. One of its most captivating features is the painted coffers on the nave’s ceiling, and you’ll also notice beautiful baroque tiles on the walls, which come from Lisbon.

This 38-kilometer route finishes in the village of Carrapateira.

This section is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, stretching from São Torpes, south of Sines to Burgau. This park covers areas in the municipalities of Aljezur, Odemira, Sines, and Vila do Bispo.
