Section 22 - Central Portugal

Marinha das Ondas / Figueira da Foz

Section 24 starts in Marinha das Ondas and heads towards Figueira da Foz, a municipality gracefully traversed by the River Mondego on its journey towards the ocean. On the south bank of the Mondego you can observe thriving salt pans, while both banks feature fertile lands adorned with rice paddies. In the vast estuary area, Morraceira Island emerges, enveloped by salt marshes, reed beds, fish farms, rice paddies, and a diverse array of bird species.

Continuing along the route, your cycling adventure will lead you to the Seiça Monastery, an intricate Cistercian monastic complex nestled beside the Seiça stream. This monastery played a crucial role in reshaping the territories and societies of villages in the Mondego estuary, introducing progressive agricultural techniques that brought about significant change.

Following your journey, you’ll arive to Alqueidão, where you can take a refreshing swin in the pool. Monuments, such as the Moinho das Marés or the Doze Mós, invite exploration – with the latter being the only one of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula.

As you reach the Mondego River’s bank, continue your pedal-powered journey towards the Lares Railway Bridge. With the Mondego River as a steadfast companion, proceed to Reveles and its Mother Church, a vantage point that treats you to one of the most splendid views of the Mondego River as it approaches its final phase.

Close to the Monastery of Verride, it’s time to cross the Mondego River, taking you to the opposite bank.

En route, pause for respite at the River Beach of Ereira, pass through Fiteira, Vila Verde, and Seixal, until the cityscape of Figueira da Foz unfolds before you. This city boasts a distinct allure, drawing from its exceptional natural beauty, historical and cultural treasures, and an array of culinary delights.

Figueira da Foz as an immense charm and potential. From its urban and semi-wild beaches, offering long stretches of sandy shores and waves catering to all preferences, to the inviting terraces and riverside restaurants, and hotels with breathtaking views, the city beckons visitors to partake in leisurely strolls or energetic walks while embracing its welcoming waterfront. Moreover, the city radiates a cultural richness and a deep-rooted sense of tradition.

Before concluding this journey, make sure you take a refreshing plunge at Claridade Beach and, as a fitting finale, relish the spectacular view from Cabo Mondego Viewpoint, where this section reaches its conclusion.
