Section 6 - Alentejo

Vila Nova de Milfontes / Melides

Section 6 has a special feature being the only section that begins and ends in Alentejo.

Starting from Vila Nova de Milfontes you can see a view with a mixture of river and sea with a unmistakable beauty. Here you can’t miss visiting the beaches, the lighthouse, the St. Clement Fort, the fishing port “Portinho do Canal” or take a walk by the Mira River that here flows into and where you can enjoy a remarkable and balanced ecosystem.

On the way to Porto-Covo you can admire a typical Alentejo landscape, fascinating especially in the spring with the presence of yellow lupin fields and poppies with yellow and red color predominate.

Following trip also passes through the beautiful Pessegueiro Island, which can be spotted from the beach as well as the Fort of the same name. Near the beach you can also see the Nossa Senhora da Queimada Fort.

Porto-Covo is almost an obligatory stop, a typical village and beaches almost reaching Sines, it becomes difficult to choose in which to stop.

In Sines, despite its industrial complex, you can’t fail to visit the Bay. As you continue your journey you will find the beautiful Santo André and Sancha Lagoons that make up the Lagoas de Santo André and Sancha Natural Reserve. Continuing north you will reach the village of Melides, which ends this section.

Part of this section is included in the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, from Vila Nova de Milfontes to São Torpes.
