The close connection between Veloso Salgado and the painters Adrien Demont and Virginie Demont-Breton represents an exceptional situation of artistic complicity and deep friendship, which is presented through the portraits of the Portuguese painter in the exhibition “The Power of the Image” at the MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art, in Lisbon, between October 12, 2018 and March 31, 2019.
In 1891, he painted the Portrait of Adrien Demont, which was imposed by the power of the image and which serves as an inspiration for the title of this exhibition.
These portraits of Veloso Salgado, powerful in sensitivity and technical quality, stand out for their unprecedented character: their expressiveness and tonal painting reveal a psychological observation of the portrayed ones and of the friendship that united them.
