Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church

Dating from the end of the 17th century, the church of Our Lady of the Conception in Atouguia da Baleia is a baroque church, attributed to the architect João Antunes, built thanks to the donations that were made by the local population and some important figures from 17th-century Portuguese nobility, such as the queen Dona Maria Sofia Isabel of Neuburg, the second wife of Dom Pedro II.

Inside, the church consists of a single nave with a vaulted ceiling.
Of particular interest are the chancel, whose walls are lined with different tones of marble, the 17th-century carved and gilded wooden altar, which houses the image of the church’s patron saint, and the shell-shaped holy water fonts made of Arrábida marble.
